Events 2014-2015

Thank you, Robin, for leading us in a Celebration of Spring, with shared stories and poems about this special season and descriptions of some of the unique flowers and trees from our different parts of the world.

 

Many thanks as well to Linda for her presentation and photos from her trips to Ecuador and Greece, and to Suzanne for her presentation and photos from her trip to the Kingdom of Bhutan.  

 

     

Many thanks to Ulrike for hosting the May Day Celebration in her lovely historic home. We were all treated to coffee and cake and a stroll in Franklin Park, followed by a delicious Northern German Lunch. Her special Mai Bowle (May Wine Punch) and famous desserts topped it all off.

Thank you, Ulrike for the warm and gracious hospitality you extended to all the members of the IWCB. 

  

 

A good group gathered at Linda's to wish her all the best for this new chapter of her life in California.

A group from the IWCB toured a stunning array of flowers paired with Art Work. The exhibit opened to the public the next day, so the flowers were at its freshest on Friday evening. Sara, thank you for your hard work to organize this private tour !

Lively conversations and a quick overview of the website's new functions !

The founder of the Russian Icon Museum bought one icon at a yard sale, which led to another and another and ... he opened a museum for his collection. At our arrival, the museum assigned a docent for a few explanations and it ended up being two hours of the most interesting tour of the galleries.

Thanks to the engaged Docent, her extensive knowledge and enthusiasm for Iconography gave us a special appreciation and understanding not only of the art works and its technique, but also for the faith and teachings related to them.

After the museum, we continued to a grill around the corner of the museum for a delicious lunch in the town of Clinton. 

We gathered to talk about women's role in society, changes through history, among others voting rights and women in the work force.

Eileen gave an overview of Emma Willard (Hart), an American Educator, whose work spurred the establishment of high schools for girls and women's colleges. She founded the Troy Female Seminary.

Michele presented a short biography of Edith Wharton (Newbold Jones). born in New York, lived in The Mount in the Berkshires for many years and then in France. where she helped the French war effort during World War I. She stayed in France until her death.

Finally Linda Z talked about Eve Ensler and her work advocating to end violence against women.

We closed by looking at the biographies of a few female Nobel Laureates. Until 2011, a total of 44 women, and 803 men had been honored.

 

Thank you to Robin and Linda for preparing such a thought provoking session.

The shared a wonderful potluck afterwards, thank you for everyone for bringing such tasty dishes.

In spite of the cold weather, it good group gathered for the monthly Pub Night for drinks, food and lively conversations.

The book “The Expats” by Chris Pavone took us all over the world, and each of us brought our own experiences to the journey. Joy, who lived many years in Luxembourg, was a key resource. We got so involved in our discussion that nobody thought about taking a picture of the group.

There were eleven of us, and we were pleased to have Schéhérazade visiting us from the Netherlands. We thank Jinny for her hospitality and her tasty hors d’oeuvres.

Our next meeting is on Monday, February 16, at Eka’s house to discuss the book “Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand” by Helen Simonson. Please come and join us!

A festive gathering, thank you, Brigitte for opening your home to all members and their friends and partners.
